TONICA — At the February meeting of the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department, Chief Al Stremlau noted that there were 11 emergency calls during January. These calls consisted of one mutual aid structure fire call to Peru, three accident calls and seven ambulance calls.
Trainings covered the review of all equipment that is carried on the trucks; various R.I.T (Rapid Intervention Team) operations; Officer Lead Squad Training, which covered Command and Control, Leadership, Communications and Organizational Skills used for the Review and Operation of Apparatus and Equipment; and verification of the Operational Readiness of Personnel and Equipment.
Deputy Chief Rick Turri reported on a planning and safety training that he attended covering highway construction and accident scenes.
Stremlau conducted new member orientation with new probationary firefighter Ben Dodge.
Assistant Chief Bill Gray reported that repairs to the rain gutters on the station and repairs to the backup emergency generator for the station have been completed. He also reported that he completed repairs to the exhaust system on pumper-1712.
Stremlau reported on a recent Division-25 MABAS meeting that he attended. Additional meetings will be held with local mutual aid fire departments to review each department’s SOG pertaining to highway safety at accidents scenes.
The department will participate in the United Way fundraiser that will be held at Aces & Eights on Feb. 28.
Ambulance Administrator Sue Huss reported on the progress of the new ambulance. She also reported that the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department ambulance has received an upgraded heart monitor/defibrillator that will be put in service soon.
Firefighter Brad Keutzer reported on various secure systems that are being considered for the fire station.
Firefighter Jessi Breit and Gray reported on a new rescue saw that has been donated to the department by the Ladd Farm Mart.
Stremlau announced that Captain Todd Anderson has been approved as third-party Driver Certification Safety Officer by the Illinois Secretary of State’s DMV Office. Information will be transitioned from the current third-party Driver Certification Officer, Deputy Chief of Training Rick Turri.
