Semi trailer catches fire; cheese destroyed

LOSTANT — The Lostant Fire Department received a call at 2:53 a.m. Aug. 31 of a semi trailer on fire at the Interstate 39 southbound off ramp to exit 41, which is the Streator/Lostant exit.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a van trailer burning in the rear. Firefighters woke the driver up and assisted him in disconnecting the tractor from the trailer. The trailer was hauling 36,000 pounds of cheese. The trailer and its contents were destroyed, and the tractor had some damage.

Lostant Fire Department was assisted by Wenona Fire Department. Illinois State Police District 17 was on the scene, along with Illinois Department of Transportation and Senica Towing.

The southbound off ramp was closed by IDOT and was still closed as 8:45 a.m. when firefighters left the scene. IDOT was still cleaning the pavement. There was no injuries.
