Rashid is recipient of Janko Scholarship

OTTAWA — The Starved Rock Country Community Foundation has announced the Dick and Carol (Kettman) Janko Scholarship for Promising Entrepreneurs has been awarded to Alea Rashid of Streator. She is a graduate of Streator High School and will attend Butler University for the 2017-18 academic year to study international business.

The Janko Scholarship reflects the Jankos’ lifelong commitment to youth, education, economic development and entrepreneurship. As consistent and caring philanthropists, the $5,000 scholarship is a most prestigious award. The fact the inaugural award will benefit a graduate of Streator High School is especially meaningful because Carol (Kettman) Janko graduated from Streator High School in 1946.

Throughout her high school career, Alea has demonstrated high academic achievement and leadership, received a host of honors and awards and participated in many activities that will serve her well as a young entrepreneur. She intends to create opportunities to empower women around the world to seek ways to enjoy the rights and freedoms of women in the United States.

“A number of very qualified candidates made application for the coveted Dick and Carol (Kettman) Janko Scholarship for Promising Entrepreneurs”, said Jay McCracken, the former superintendent of Putnam County Schools, an IVCC Board member and the chairman of the SRCCF Board of Directors. “We extend our sincere congratulations to Alea as the first winner of this most generous scholarship, made possible by Dick and Carol Janko.”
