IVCC announces winners of Richard Publow Memorial Awards in Writing

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College recently named recipients of the Richard Publow Memorial Awards in Writing at the annual student academic awards banquet.

The award is open to students enrolled in Basic Composition II and English Composition I and II during the spring, summer or fall semester.

In Basic Composition II, Cheryl Carlson of Utica was first; Linda Buland of Mendota was second; and Gerald "Jerry" Savage of LaSalle was third.

In English Composition I, Antonia Jenifer Kovacs of Putnam was first; Josh Mesick of Princeton was second; and Payton Deady of Ottawa was third.

In English Composition II, Gabriel Braboy of Dalzell was first; Monica Joerger of LaMoille was second; and Timothy Perry of Peru was third.

First-place winners received $75; second-place winners received $50; and third-place winners received $25.

The award honors the memory of former English and philosophy instructor Richard H. Publow for his exemplary life and teaching career by recognizing exceptional student writing.

English instructor Nora Villarreal said, “It was so great to see the students’ pride as they received their awards. I think we’re doing something really special for them. I hope Mr. Publow would be proud.”
