NCICG to host meetings for natural hazard mitigation planning

PERU/LACON — North Central Illinois Council of Governments (NCICG) will host two meetings to gather public input to create goals for the region’s multi-jurisdictional Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan (NHMP). The plan covers Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam and Stark counties.

Meetings will be at 6 p.m. on Jan. 28 in the Peru Community Room located at the Peru City Hall, 1901 Fourth St., Peru, and at 6 p.m. on Jan. 29 at Lacon City Hall, 406 Fifth St., Lacon.

The format for the meetings will be identical. Throughout the planning process, meetings are being held across the region to give all residents the opportunity to provide input.

In order to receive federal funding for pre-disaster mitigation funds, counties must have an adopted and approved Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan (NHMP). The purpose of a NHMP is to identify the types of natural hazards that impact a jurisdiction, to assess each jurisdiction’s vulnerability to those hazards and to formulate mitigation strategies that will lessen the severity of natural disasters by protecting human life and property. Every five years, plans must be reviewed and updated to remain active.
