LOSTANT — Sometimes in a small town, it seems like everyone knows something about everyone else in town. That’s especially true in Lostant, thanks to the Lostant Ladies League.
Each year for more than 30 years, the league has published a calendar with most of the village’s residents birthdays and anniversaries listed on each date.
“It’s not everyone, it’s the ones who want to be on it,” Marlene Simeck of the Lostant Ladies League said. “It’s them and their kids and their grandkids who might have moved away. A lot of people buy them as Christmas gifts.”
“At first, a company came and a representative went around with one of us and got the advertising. The club decided we would rather do it ourselves because the representative was quite pushy,” Simeck said. “We were uncomfortable with the ones who complained because we felt like some of them were pushed into advertising even though they didn’t want to. We just started doing it ourselves.
“We go through and make corrections each year for new births and deaths.”
In addition to the calendars, the Lostant Ladies League also takes gifts to shut-ins and people from the village in nursing homes and hold a breakfast each year for the Lostant Grade School graduates.
The Lostant Ladies Leagues meets once a month with the exception of June and July. Anyone interested in joining should contact Linda Decker at 815-368-3424 or Norma Lightle at 815-368-3422.
The calendars are sold at Illini State Bank in Lostant for $2.
